Joined a Home Development Project in Prima Selayang, one of Bank Negara's projects. Our role as a volunteer was to raise out our hands and reach out to more families who needed it. The moment we stepped out of the bus, I noticed a view of true poverty.
There was an incident which occurred. Before heading back, I had one last task to perform - to head over to Paramestuari's house (an old woman in her late 40s) and check if they own any of the furniture stated in the checklist given. Paramestuari told us that everything in their house belong to the neighbour, except the house lot, the fan and the lamp. The neighbour moved out so the furniture was just temporally there.
After finishing the survey, I explained the situation to the guy-in-charge. After a few minutes, he came up to me and told me that I was cheated and they aren't what they said they were. I was really disappointed on their behaviour as I was really trying my best to help them.
I've come across this article and it states that back in the early age of mankind it was all about survival. Tribes of hunters stayed together and protected each other from external threat. Food was hard to come by, and if they couldn't catch their food, then they would starve to death. Now we could go to the local store and get some food. Now we could find a place to live and have as shelter. We could increase our social interactions and get to know more people, and help advance our society. Life should be easier!
But NO.. Instead, we are stuck in a world where MONEY rules EVERYTHING!
Coming to think of it, if you look at it in a different angle, everyone in this world is just trying to survive. And I shouldn't be blaming them. Only those who are in poverty will understand - desperately wanting to get out of the shit hole and have a different tomorrow. In the end of the day, you will realize that dignity is worthless. Dignity is nothing but the element that prevent us from proceeding.
Humanity has lost its ways and must find its way back, and not worship a piece of paper, or worse a digital number on a computer screen in which we call a bank statement.
